Beliefs and Values Held
He believed that people shouldn't just stand by and watch people go blind when it could easily be cured or avoided. Evidence of this is that, there was a civil war in Eritrea and Fred Hollows discovered that there were no professional eye doctors (ophthalmologist), so he gathered his companions and flew off to Eritrea to help those who needed eye treatment even though Eritrea was the poorest country, he treated every eye as if he was doing the king's or prime minister's eyes. Fred always believed strongly in equality for all people. He was told about how poor Aboriginal eye health was in Sydney. He took up the cause, and helped set up the first Aboriginal Medical Service. There are now more than 60 Aboriginal Medical Services across Australia. He believed that "the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other" as it says on the homepage picture.
